10、 effect on nonsmokers.Tobacco smoke is a mixture of gases,liquids and particles(微粒).There are hundreds of chemicals in tobacco and hundreds more created when tobacco bums.Altogether close to 4,000 different ones have been found,including dozens that are poisonous or cancer-causing,or both.Some of th

12、rette goes into the air.The amount of pollution from cigar and pipe smoke is even higher.In fact,the amount of carbon monoxide from one cigar is twice as high as from three cigarettes smoked at the same time.The smoke from the burning end has higher amounts of cancer-causing and other dangerous thin

13、gs than the smoke inhaled by the smoker.There is twice as much tar and nicotine in the former as in the latter.Three other chemicals known to cause cancer in humans also occur at higher levels.As well there is five times as much 4 carbon monoxide,which robs the blood of oxygen,and 40 to 170 times as

14、 much ammonia.When you inhale carbon monoxide,the gas pushes oxygen molecules(分子)out of your red blood cells.One study shows that after only 30 minutes in a smoke-filled room the carbon monoxide level in a nonsmokers blood increases as well as the blood pressure and heart beat.Fourteen separate stud

15、ies of the relationship between passive smoking and lung cancer were reported during the period 1981 to 1986.All but one showed more risks of lung cancer in groups of people exposed to second-hand smoke.Nine more recent reports on passive smoking and lung cancer found that long-term exposure(暴露)to e
