2、terpreting Decimals,Percentages and FractionsThe expression of decimals,percentages and fractions are similar in Chinese and English.But we still have to pay attention to the following points:1.If zero is on the left of decimal point(小数点)in a figure,then the figure should be read as:“zero point”,or“
3、oh point”,or naught point”.e.g.0.8(zero point eight/oh point eight/naught point eight)2.Numbers following the decimal point(小数点)are read one by one as isolated numbers.e.g.3.14 (three point one four)Interpreting Decimals,Percentages and Fractions3.“%”in percentages reads as“percent”pE5sent.e.g.16.5%
4、(sixteen point five percent)4.Expression of fractions:we use cardinals(基数)for numerators(分子)and ordinals(序数)for denominators(分母).And denominators should be in plural form if its numerator is more than one.e.g.1/5(one fifth)3/5(three fifths)5.Chinese expressions like 千分之五,七万分之九 can be interpreted int
5、o“five per thousand”,“nine per seventy thousand”or“one out of a thousand”,“nine out of seventy thousand”.6.Special Chinese expressions like“六成”and“八折”can be interpreted into“sixty percent”and“twenty percent off”.G R E A T A C H I E V E M E N T SInterpreting Cardinal Numbers(基数的口译)P r a c t i c e m a
6、 k e s p e r f e c t.Step 1.We can start from numbers were familiar with.For example:our phone number,ID card number,etc.Step 2.Then we can practise interpreting numbers with 2 digits and then 3 digits and 4 digits and so on.Training PreparationStep 3.With these preparations we can then begin to pra
7、ctice interpreting more complicated figures.1.difference in digit(位数表达的不同)In English,we divide figures every three digits from the ones unit(个位),while in Chinese,we do that every four digits.For example:128000 reads as(128,000)one hundred and twenty-eight thousand in English,while(12/8000)十二万八千 in C
8、hinese.Note-taking of Figures “点三杠四”or “上标下标”Drop a“,”every three digits in English numbers,and draw a“/”or“”every four digits in Chinese numbers.Thus drop a“,”when we hear“thousand,million,billion or trillion”.And draw a“/”when we hear“万、亿、万亿”e.g.eleven thousand two hundred and fifteen 1 1,2 1 5(点三
