2、e is the subject matter. The rationales this course is based on include: 1) shift from English for General Purpose (EGP) to English for Academic Purpose (EAP) and English for Specific Purpose is the trend of English teaching and learning at tertiary level in China; 2) although inseparable, EAP diffe

3、rs from EGP in many respects and wairants special attention so that the learners use English language proficiently and properly in academic contexts; and 3) English for Academic Purpose entails a vast array of skills and a good knowledge of the subject matter. This course, therefore, is framed to pr

4、ovide the students with opportunities to expose themselves to the subject matter related to medicine, to develop language proficiency and skills as needed for communication in academic contexts, and to use English language in simulated or real situations where English language serves as the medium f

5、or communication.OBJECTIVESAt the end of the course, the students are expected toenrich themselves with knowledge of content matter such as treatment and prevention of diseases, alternative and supplementary medicine, emerging and reemerging diseases, etc.;expand by a large margin their vocabulary,

6、especially those specialized terms in medical context;be able to prepare and deliver PPT presentation on the topics related to medicine;be proficient when communicating in academic contextsbe familiar with the components of a typical journal paper, and the characteristics of each component;build up

8、 the classroom;Accomplish the assigned oral presentation in class;Get dynamically involved in any classroom activities;Enlarge your vocabulary and language knowledge and improve your sense of the target language;Enrich yourself with knowledge of medicine-related issues;Accomplish writing assignments

9、;Ensure your attendance.ASSIGNMENTSWriting tasksWriting tasks based on the contents of the lectures will be specified in class. The requirements for each task vary, but the following are some general considerations.Students have to submit the written tasks in the format specified by the instructor.I

10、n any submissions, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors as indicated by Microsoft Word with underlines in red should be checked and corrected before submission.An electronic word count should be provided for all written tasks.A word limit of 10% applies to all the written tasks. For example, if the

11、 word limit is 100, your submission can be in a range from 90 -110 words (excluding appendices or references).The electronic version should be emailed to the instructor 2-3 days before the due date to avoid all possible delays such as computer breakdown the night before the due date or the e-mail mi

12、ght be jammed somewhere online! A paper version, if required by the instructor, should be handed in to the instructor in class.Writing tasks that are handed in ontime will be corrected graded and returned promptly, delayed submissions (within 5 working days) will be evaluated with lowered credits, a

13、nd submissions delayed by longer than 5 working days will not be accepted. If you have to be absent on the day the assignment is due, turn it in at the following session of the class. Absence is not an excuse for later submission.Writing tasks account for 10% in your final grade.1. Classroom Present

14、ationYou are supposed to deliver 2-3-minute presentations on the given topics related to the content of the text (Topics for presentation of Text A).Your presentations will be integrated into other classroom activities when the related part is discussed.Your presentation is judged by PREPARATION, PE

15、RTINENCE, FLUENCY, PRONUNCIATION and REACTION from the audience.Your presentations account for 10% in your final grade.2. Teamwork ReportThe assignment, to be completed in a group of four or three, is to further your understanding of the text covered in class, to facilitate your actual use of target

16、 language in context, and to build cooperation with other learners.PreparationThe class is divided into groups according to the class size.Each group elect their team leader.A group will be designated to deal with a particular unit. A weeks time is allowed for each group to make preparation.Task Des

17、ignEach group is supposed to complete Researching and Reporting as described in each unit and deliver a 1 O-minute PPT report as a team.The students are encouraged to use the language learned from the text.The PPT should be emailed to the instructor two days ahead of the report.EvaluationCriteria fo

18、r evaluation include: Overall Impression, Organization, Pertinence, Use of Language.As a teamwork task, a holistic approach will be taken for the judgment of the performance, allowing differences of a small range between the scores.The performance accounts for 10% in the final grade.Academic Honesty

19、Students should be well aware of the policies and regulations concerning academic honesty in Fudan University. Students are believed to be honest. Cheating, plagiarism, forgery and knowingly furnishing false information in your academic work are grave matters that are subject to discipline. Discipli
