4、searching norms constructed in the postcolonial context, cam e into being in the late 1980s. There are two basic concepts in Postcolon ial Translation Theory, the power dif ferentials and hybridity. The former refers to the inequality between various languages as well as the power dif ferentials bet

5、ween different nations and cultures, while the latter is meant to appear during the cross-cultural communicatio n. Postcolonial Translation Theor y is a new paradigm different from the linguistic research on translation. The English version of Hulanhe Zhuan, translated b y a celebrated American sino

6、lo gist Howard Goldblatt, is full of postcolonial features. This thesis ai ms at studying the postc olonial features and translation strategies adopted by Goldblatt through case stud ies of the English version of Hulanhe Zhuan. This thesis is com posed of three ch apters, Chapter Three as the main b

7、ody , which presents a detailed and systematic analysis of the English version of Hulanhe Zhuan from power differentials and hybridity, with the fo cus on linguistic and cultural aspect The linguistic aspect is further analyzed f ro m three levels, lexical, syntactic and textual, while the cultural

8、one is analyedf rom five aspects, religion, folk custom s, measure words, prov erbs and kinship term s, etc. From the analysis we could see the postcolonial translation thoughts and strategies are embodied in different levels of the English version of Hulanhe Zhuan. It is found that Howard Goldblatt

9、 com bines the strategy of foreignization and domestication on both linguistic level and cu ltural one. Nor mally the translator s choice of translation strategy is tightly connected with hi s translation purpose and the specific social context. On one hand, the writing style of Hulanhe Zhuan is a c

10、ombination of the style of prose and poe m. Being greatly enchanted by Xiao Hong and her genius writing skills, Go ldblatt decides to tr anslation Hulanhe Zhuan into English. In order to rep roduce faithfully Xiao Hongs unique writing techniques and the local customs in Hulan Town, Goldblatt emplo y

11、s foreignizing translation. On the other hand, owing to the power differentials between the C hinese culture and English HI 浙江财经大学硕士学位论文culture, and the ethnocen trism and self-superiority of the English readers, they p refer the fluent translation . Therefore, Gol dblatt uses domesti eating transla

12、tion by rearranging and rewriting in his translated version to cater to the target readers reading habits. Generally speaking, the transla tion strategies of domestication and foreignization are not opposite to each other, but in a dialectical unity. In other words, Goldblatts translated version for

13、ms moderate hybridity. By doing so, it does not cause any reading problems; instead it helps to widen TL readers horizons and to teach them more about “the other”. Res earches on a literary transla tion from the perspective of postcolonial translation theory hav e great significance in decla rin g t

14、he identity o f minorities and dispelling cultural hegemony. It will be of great h elp in elim inating hinders of the communication betw een the West and the East and spr eadin g C hinese culture and literatu re to the outside world. 15、slation study; power differentials; hybridity IV浙江财经大学硕士学位论文摘 要后殖民翻译研宄成形于 20 世纪 80 年代，是在后殖民理论基础上形成的关于 翻译的一系列研宄范式。后殖民理论的两个基本概念为“权力差异” 和“杂合”。 “权力差异”指的是各民族语言之间的不平等以及各民族文化之间的权力差异， 而“杂合” 则是语言和文化交流过程中的必然产物，这就为翻译研宄开拓了一个 不同于以往的语言学角度的新的研宄范式。美国著名汉学家葛浩文（Howard Goldblatt)所翻译的呼兰河传就颇具后殖民主义的特征，本文旨在通过分析 呼兰河传英译本来探讨后

16、殖民主义思想在翻译中的体现。 本文分为三章，第三章为论文的主题部分。第一章对已有的呼兰河传和 呼兰河传英译本的研宄进行了梳理。第二章介绍了后殖民翻译理论的主要概 念。第三章从后殖民翻译理论的权力差异和杂合两个视角对呼兰河传英译本 的翻译策略进行了探讨，重点放在语言和文化两个层面，语言层面上涉及到词汇、 句法和语篇三方面，文化层面上则涉及宗教、民俗、度量衡、谚语和亲属称谓等。 通过对以上不同层面的分析展示呼兰河传英译本中所体现的后殖民主义翻译 思想以及翻译策略。 研宄发现，葛浩文采取了异化归化相结合的翻译策略，无论是在语言还是文 化层面均如此。译者对翻译策略的选择与译者的翻译目的和社会环境是紧密

17、相关 的。一方面， 呼兰河传的写作手法兼融了散文和诗的风格，葛浩文被萧红的 独特的创作手法所吸引，决定把它译成英文。为更好的传达萧红独特的创作特点 和呼兰河小城的风土人情，葛浩文的译文呈现异化倾向。另一方面，由于中国文 化和英语文化之间的权力差异，英语读者在文化上的优越感和民族中心主义倾向 使他们更乐意接受通顺的译文，为迎合英语读者，葛浩文对译文做了一定的调整 和改写，使译文呈归化倾向。 总体看来，异化和归化翻译策略并非僵持对立的，而是一种辩证统一的关系， 换言之， 呼兰河传的英译文是适度杂合的。异化和归化相结合的翻译策略有 助于他们开阔视野，了解更多“ 他者” 文化。这对于彰显弱势民族的文化

Research Background Since Mo Yan received the Nobel Prize in literature in 2012, the translator, Howard Goldblatt has drawn an increas ing attention from all over the world. However , scholars only focus their attention on a small part of Howard Goldblatt s translation. In r

22、 ecent years, quantities of studies have been made on the English version of Red Sorghum 高粱 ）and 购仏及纪 m (狼图腾 ） ）while studies on Goldblatts first translation on Chinese literature, Tales of Hulan River, is relatively few and lim ited. The existing researches are conducted m ainly from the perspectiv

23、e of culture, adaptation and selection, stylistics, etc. It is found that there are two articles ex amining the English translation of the Hulanhe Zhuan using postcolonial translat ion theories. The authors only focus on one aspect of postcolonial tr anslation theories, hybridity. However, its safe

24、to say that Goldblatt, as a translator from the strong culture, is influenced by the power differential and his tr anslation, in som e way, represents cultural hegem ony. Therefore, a deep er analysis through probing into two aspects of p ostcolonial translation theories, the power differentials and

25、 hybridity is of great necessity. 2. Research Methodology Postcolonial theory, which grows up and attracts the worlds attention in 1970s, mainly focuses on power and iden tity, criticizes cultural hegemony, introspects the complicated relations in the colonial systems and investigates the influence

26、of colony to the present world. The postcolon ial translation theory, established in the postcolonial critical context, is a series of research m ethods on transl ation. Guided by this theory , this thesis tries to carr y out a study on th e postcolonial features in the English version of Hulanhe Zh

Based on the exam pies collected from both the Chinese version and English version on linguistic and cultu ral levels, this thesis e xplores a qualitative-based investigation under the guidance of postcolonial translation theory and its application

29、 in the translation of Hulanhe Zhuan. 3. Research Significance Howard Goldblatt, as an ex cellen t translator of contem porar y Chinese literary works, has translated over 40 works of m ore than 20 famous Chinese writers, many of which won influential translation prizes. However, the academic studie

30、s onHowar d Goldblatt including his translat ion cannot, to the best of my knowledge, totally justify his contribution. In CNKI, the quantity of academic articles and papers before 2008 is very small. Besides, researches on the English version of Tales ofHulan River, Howard Goldblatts first translat

31、ion work, is studies rather few. This thesis is an attempt to carry out a systematic research on Howard Goldblatt translated work Tales ofHulan River. 4. Organization of the ThesisThis thesis is com posed of three chapters, Chapter Three as the m ain body. The first chapter is the litera ture review

32、 on the stud ies of Hulanhe Zhuan and the English translation Tales of Hulan River. The second chapter ta kes postcolonial translation theory as the theoretical foundation of this stud y. Chapter three presents a detailed and systematic analysis of English version of Hulanhe Zhuan from power differe

33、ntials and hybridity, with the focus on linguistic and cultural asp ect The linguistic aspect is further analyzed from three aspects, lexical, syntactic and textual, while the cultural one is from five aspects, r eligion, folk custom s, measure words, proverbs and kinship term s, etc. From the analy

34、sis we could see the postcol onial translation thoughts and strategies are embodied in dif ferent levels of the English version of Hulanhe Zhuan. 35、h e study and suggestions for studies in the future are given. 3浙江财经大学硕上学位论文Chapter 1 Literature Review 1.1 Previous Studies on Hulanhe Zhuan Since Hulanhe Zhuan came into being, it has attracted a lot of scholars devoting their studies to this novel. Particularly after 1980s, more and more studies

36、on this novel have been carried out from varied angles. First, many domestic scholars focus their studies on the artistic features of Hulanhe Zhang Guozhen (张国侦，1982)）in his 4 L;yr/6* 尸 Sorrow and Native LifeA Review of Hulanhe Zhuan, points out that enriched symbolism and lyricism are two essential

37、 methods of the novel. In Dramatic IronyOn the Unique Qualities of Writing Style of Xiao Hongs Novels, AiXidiQmmg 艾觀呢, 2002) writes in detail about the stylistic featu res of Hulanhe Zhuan to revea 1 the dramatic irony in this novel, and he also emphasizes the dramatic irony must be paid enough atte

38、ntion to. W en Guiliang ( 文贵良， 2007), in his Literary Chinese and Generation of Their Meaning in Hulanhe Zhuan, studies the features of Xiao Hon g language. He tries to find out how can these literary Chinese words give readers a sense of solitude that penetrates the flesh and blood to the bone. Bas

39、ed on this, Wen holds that Xiao Hongs language, o n one hand, carries on th e tradition of vernacular C hinese, and on the other hand, creates Xiao H ongs own feature. Zheng Li (郑莉，2008)）in her Unique Exp ression of Compassion and UnderstandingA Brief Comment on Text Characteristics of Xiao Hongs No

40、vel Hulanhe Zhuanf focuses on how Xiao Hong uses her special expressive ability to c reate and co mplete Hulanhe Zhuan whose style is among novel, prose and poem . Zheng Li carri es out her study on such aspects as the creative structure, the poetic language and the repetitive lyric art. Other schol

41、ars, for instance, Xu Huihui ( 徐慧慧,2011), Ye Yunjia (叶云佳,2009) and Li Jun (李钧,2012) attempt to study Hulanhe Zhuan from the perspective of aesthetics. 42、he Zhuan. Second, there are also many scholars focusi ng their studies on the writing m ethods used in Hulanhe Zhuan. They m ainly devote their inte rest on such aspects as th e narrative skills, the structure and the angles of this novel. Wang Jincheng (王金城，2002) in his A Poetics Interpretation: St

43、yle and Strategy of N arration Comments on Hulanhe River by Xiao Hong gives a detailed textual and poetic analysis of the nov el from the perspective of literar y style and strategy of narration. Wang believes that Xiao Hong is the originator in designin g two angl es of narration and two sets of narrative discourse and organizing them in perfect harmony.
