This paper will concentrate on analyzing settings effect on characteristics and adding more information about the growth of the 15-year-old boy through

3、 analyzing the setting.Key words: setting; A Sunrise on the Veld; boy; characteristic; growthIntroductionA Sunrise on the Veld showed a boy, who was fifteen years old, got up very early in the morning so as to run alone to the veld to enjoy his freedom. He thought he could control everything that he

4、 would like to. However, he saw a buck was eaten by a large group pf ants and thought that life could not always be controlled by ourselves. What made the boy amazed was that the buck was actually killed by him by accident. At the end of the novel, the boy began to think about nature and life. Doris

5、 Lessing was the author of this novel and she won Nobel Prize in 2007. She paid attention to the growth of teenagers in most of her works such as The Old Chief Mshlanga and Through the Tunnel.This paper will mainly research on settings effect on characteristics and the growth of the boy in A Sunrise

6、 on the Veld. For the relationship between setting and character, this paper will use the theory which presented by professor Shi Jian in the course of Academic Writing: setting intersects with characterthe importance of place, circumstance and time upon the characters growth and change.Settings Eff

7、ect on CharacteristicsAt the beginning of the novel, the setting was the early winter morning when people were on their warm bed. The boy, however, got up energetically and ran away from home secretly. This setting showed that the boy had great will against the coldness. Running away without telling

8、 his parents also showed that the boy had a feature of rebellion. When the boy “passed a wall of trees”, the house “looked so low and small, crouching there under a tall and brilliant sky”. This setting showed that the boy was prideful for his behavior. Therefore, he shouted and yelled wildly on the

9、 veld. And the vast veld also provided him with a good condition to expressing himself. Because veld was so large and there was nobody there, he could shout freely to be himself and also come to think that he could do anything in the world. At that moment, the boy was childish and even a little nave

10、.The setting of gorge was an important element in this short novel. Because of the gorge, the boy could get echo. Because of the echo, boy thought the world was answering him. Here showed the boy was confident, nave and had a high spirit.The setting of unknown and not joyful voice indicated the boy

11、was still a child and was fearful to mysterious things. The setting of ants eating the meat of buck showed the boys sympathy.At the end of the novel, when the boy found it was he who led the buck to be eaten by ants, he did not know how to do and he even wanted to escape from the veld. He refused to

12、 admit it and finally he decided to come here again to think the next morning. The boy, although was flustered and confused, was eventually full of courage. The setting of this novel described a boy with great will, pride and the thoughts of freedom. He was rebellious, nave and fearful to mysterious

13、 things. Sometimes he was confident and full of high spirit and courage. Through these settings, readers got to know a true and all-round character.Settings Uses on the Growth of the BoyFirstly, Doris Lessing used the low bush, diamond drops on grass, and singing birds on the wide veld to encourage

14、the boy to shout and yell. At that time, this boy was in a positive or even proud attitude towards life. He thought “all the great men of the world have been as I am now, and there is nothing I cant become, nothing I cant do; there is no country in the world I cannot make part of myself, if I choose

15、.” He thought he could control everything in the world, which showed the nave part of a child.When the boy witnessed the ants ate the meat of buck and he gave up to shoot the buck so as to relieve it, his mind became more mature because he came up the idea of the rule of nature that living things wo

16、uld die which he could not stop.Finally, the boy found that the bucks death was caused by his unintentional action several days ago. He wanted to escape from this place. He decided, however, to come back to this bush and think about this event the very next morning. It was not important whether the

17、boy would admit to be responsible for the bucks death or not the next morning. His decision of coming back showed that he chose to face it. This was not the blind courage as before any more and this decision was a symbol of the boys growth.Through the analysis, we could find that more the setting mo

18、ving forward, more mature the boy became. The structure of Novel of Initiation is: innocentbeing temptedrun awayconfusedbeing testedlosing innocenceepiphanyget the truth of life.3 And the setting of A Sunrise on the Veld just fitted this structure.ConclusionBy analyzing settings effect on characteri

19、stics, we knew a rebellious and nave boy who was fearful to unknown things. He had great will to against the coldness in winter. He was full of the thoughts of freedom, high spirits and courage.
