3、在现代国际贸易中,商务英语函电绝大部分是由商务电子邮件来完成的。可以这么说,研究商务电子邮件的语言特色即是研究现代商务英语函电的语言特色。而商务电子邮件的写作也引起了语言研究者的关注。本文通过与传统商务英语函电的语言特色和写作原则进行比较,及对商务英语函电的发展趋势进行研究并结合对商务英语邮件的分析和研究,揭示了现代商务英语函电的语言特色和社会功能。关键词:传统商务英语函电;现代商务英语函电;语言特色;发展趋势;商务电子邮件AbstractAs the universalization of internet and the enhancement of business communicat

Especially, with the advance of the information era and the Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008, the field of foreign trade in our country is experiencing an unprecedented evolution.As one of primarily important means of written communication, business correspondence plays a more and

12、 more important role in the international business communication. So in order to prevail in international trade, and to be successful in business with foreigners, we should proficiently apply the principles of business writing and comprehend the language features of business English correspondence.1

13、 Theoretic Knowledge of Business English Correspondence1.1 What is the Business English Correspondence?Correspondence is known as communication through exchange of letters. We communicate our feelings, thoughts etc. to our friends and relatives through letters that may be called personal corresponde

14、nce. A businessman also writes and receives English letters in his day-to-day transaction, which may be called business English correspondence. Business English correspondence or business English letter is a written communication between parties in English. Businessmen may write letters to suppliers

15、 of goods and also receive letters from the suppliers. Customers may write letters to businessmen for seeking information about availability of goods, price, quality, sample etc. or placing orders for purchase of goods. Thus, business English letter may be defined as a media or means through which v

16、iews are expressed and ideas or information is communicated in writing in the process of business activities.1.2 The importance of Business English CorrespondenceNowadays, business operations are not limited in any locality, state or nation. Today production takes place in one area but consumption t

17、akes place everywhere. Since the businessmen as well as customers live in far off places, they have no sufficient time to contact each other personally. Thus there arises the need for writing letters. Business letters were not essential in the old days. But now the importance of letters has increase

18、d because of vast expansion of business, increase in demand as well as supply of goods. The importance of business English correspondence is as follows:i) Inexpensive and convenient modeThough there are many other modes of communication like telephone, fax etc., business information can be offered a

19、nd obtained economically and conveniently by letters.ii) Help in maintaining proper relationshipNowadays, business activities are not confined to any one area or locality. The businessmen as well as customers are scattered throughout the word. Thus there is a need to maintain proper relationship amo

20、ng them by using appropriate means of communication. Here business letters play an important role. The customers can write letters to businessmen seeking information about products, and businessmen also supply various kinds of information to customers. This can help them to carry on business.iii) Cr

21、eate and maintain goodwillSometimes business letters are written to create and enhance goodwill. Businessmen at times send letters to enquire about complaints and suggestions of their customers. They also send letters to inform the customers about the availability of a new product, clearance sale, e

All of this results in cordial relations with the customers, which enhances the goodwill of business.iv) Help in expansion of businessBusiness requires information regarding competing products, prevailing prices, promotion, market activities etc. If the trader has to run from place to another pl

23、ace to get information, it will result in loss of time. But through business letters, he can make enquiries about the products and markets. He can also receive orders from different countries and, thus enhance sales.v) Serve as evidenceWe can not expect a trader to memorize all facts and figures in

24、a conversation that normally take place among businessmen. Through letters, he can keep a record of all facts. Thus, letters can serve as evidence in case of dispute between the two parties.1.3 The history of business English correspondence1.3.1 Early English Business LettersAccording to experts spe

25、cialized in the history of business communication such as Malcolm Richardson and Luella M. Wolf, English business letters appeared around 14th century. Two letters written by the merchants of that time provided us with some glimpse of earliest English business letters. One letter was written by Will

26、iam Paston and the other by Cely family. The Pastons are a large and prosperous land-owning family of the later Middle ages. And Celly family is a well-to-do London family that thrived on the wool trade. Their letters are the only collection of merchants letters, which have been preserved and printe

27、d. The rising merchant class began writing letters though they were generally undereducated. Besides, the content of the letter is more holistic, including both family life and business affairs. By 1400, business correspondence was handled largely by a class of professional scribes, most of whom wer

28、e affiliated in some way with the Church. These men wrote exclusively in Latin or French and followed the rules of Dictamen strictly. Practically speaking, since the scribes were trained and employed by the Church and the aristocracy (which regarded French as the only true language of a noble), they

29、 would naturally prefer to write in the official languages of their patrons. Finally, the middle class, for which the use of Latin and French was of the greatest inconvenience, had no tradition of letter-writing. After 1400, increasing nationalistic forces gradually pushed Latin and French out of En

30、gland, and as a result, English business writing became the property of the merchant and agricultural classes as well as the Church and central government. British King Henry invaded France in 1415 and began the last phase of the Hundred Years War, which was to end disastrously for the English. Prob

31、ably as a propaganda measure to win the support of the middle class, Henry began to send his correspondence home from the war in English, thereby becoming the first English monarch to use the written vernacular with any regularity. The political movement in language also exerted influence on social

32、life especially business activities. 1.3.2 Development and Diversification of English Business LettersModel Books during Renaissance during 16th and 17th century, letters written in English were getting increasingly popular. In response to the common need for guidance, model books on letter writing

33、began to appear. The first English model book on letter writing was Fulwoods The Enemie of Idlenesse, which appeared in 1568. After that, purely English model books surfaced rapidly and in varied forms. Such books include The English Secretaire, A Panopolie of Epistles, The Promptors Packet, The Sec

34、retaries Studie, Hobsons Horse-Load of Letters, A Poste with a Madde Packet of Letters, and The Merchants Avizo. The study of these model books could offer us with some insight into the evolution of English business letters. Among these model books on letter writing, three are worth careful consider

35、ation-Fulwoods The Enemie of Idlenesse, Angel Days The English Secretaire and John Browns The Merchants Avizo, for these books enjoyed several editions, indicating that they were well received at that time. The Enemie of Idlenesse was first published in 1568 and by 1621 it had enjoyed 10 editions. T

36、he book, which is divided into four books, combines theory with practice. Although it was a translation of a French work on epistolary method, Fulwood adapted it to English usage and situation. A close study of the book shows the remaining influence of Dictamen, especially in salutation, inside and

37、outside superscriptions (the readers name and address).But more we can detect is deviation from and development of medieval Dictamen. Fulwood was strongly against the rigid, complicated format of Dictamen. Deeply influenced by Erasmus. By the mid-17th century, commerce and trade had become the most

38、important part of social life in England, especially in London. To sum up, during the 16th and 17th century, business letter writing in England underwent great changes not only in format but also in functions. Some prominent features are the growing attention to letters adjusted to various business

39、situations and a shift from rigid, complicated format to simplified one, from pompous diction to the one suited for the receiver. 1.3.3 Dramatic Changes in the World of BusinessAt the turn of the 20th century, North American continent was still in the course of Industrial Revolution, whose impact wa

40、s that it completely changed the nature of industry. Firstly, the scale of industrial enterprises continued to increase. Enormous factories appeared employing around twenty thousand workers producing farm machinery, textiles, electrical equipment and automobiles. Meanwhile, in factories, machines we

41、re replacing human labor, reducing many jobs while increasing efficiency. As a result, more and more Americans began to work as white-collars, taking the job of engineers, supervisors, clerical personnel and especially working in booming retail industry. With the advent of computers and the increasi

42、ng demand for efficient communication all around the globe, a new electronic medium of communication appeared in 1970s. Due to its convenience and efficiency, electronic mail messages are playing an increasingly important role in business communication and are receiving a growing attention from scho

43、lars. An analysis of electronic mail messages shows that people who invent this medium and compose such messages draw on inspiration from memos and business letters. Firstly, electronic mail messages often demonstrate some aspects of memos. For example, electronic mail messages are designed to consi

44、st of the heading of a memo. Many electronic mail messages especially those for formal business communication follow the format and principles of business letters with the salutation of Mr. or Ms. Yet, transformation in medium (from paper to electronic signals) has brought about new options and new

45、constraints. The near-simultaneity of the medium makes it possible for people to write to each other immediately after they receive the message, which leads to informal, conversational tone, many abbreviations for instant feedback, spelling and grammatical mistakes which were considered improper in
