5、 Reserve Board for over a decade,is regarded as one of the most important men by many people in the world.Greenspan was born on March 6,1926.his father was a stockbroker and his mother worked in retailing.When he was 4 years old,his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother in New York.Young

6、Alan was a shy boy but he was very good at a large numbers.When he was only five,his mother would get him to add three-digit numbers in his head.He loved baseball and tennis.And,like his mother,he developed a deep appreciation for music.In the mid-1940s,he studied briefly at a music school in New Yo

7、rk,and then toured the country for a year with a music band.Then he entered New York Universitys School of Commerce and graduated with a degree in economics.He got a Masters degree at NYU in 1949,and shifted to Columbia University to work on his PhD.When his money ran low,he withdrew from graduate s

8、chool and went to work for the National Industrial Conference Board.He eventually earned a PhD from NYU in 1977.In the mid-1950s Greenspan opened an economic consulting company.In 1987,he began to work in the Federal Government.Today his work as Chief of Federal Reserve Board is much the same as the

9、 work he did on Wall street,trying to understand how the economy is working and what drives it;offering suggestions for improvement.He is,however,making less money.Bill Clinton Bill Clinton was born on August 19,1946,in the small town of Hope,Arkansas.He was named after his father,William Jefferson

10、Blythe II,who had been killed in a car accident just three months before his son was born Clinton earned a bachelors degree in international affairs from Georgetown University in 1968,and he subsequently attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship.After earning a law degree from Yale Universi

11、ty in 1973,he returned to his home state and taught law at the University of Arkansas.In 1972,Clinton directed the Texas campaign of Democratic presidential nominee George S.McGovern.He managed Georgia Democratic Governor Jimmy Carters successful presidential run in Arkansas in 1976.Clinton married

12、Hillary Rodham,a fellow law student from Yale,on Oct.11,1975.The couple had a daughter,Chelsea,in 1980.Clinton ran unsuccessfully for the U.S.House in 1974.In 1978,Clinton was elected governor of Arkansas at the age of 32.Clinton lost his bid for reelection in 1980 to Frank D.White.He won back the g

13、overnorship in 1982,and won again in 1984 and 1986.In 1992 Clinton and his running mate,Senator Al Gore(D,Tennessee),were elected President and Vice President with 43%of the popular vote,to 38%for President George Bush and 19%for independent candidate Ross Perot.Chairman Mao(1893-1976)Chairman Mao(M

14、ao Zedong or Mao Tse Tung)is the founder of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949 and one of the founders of the Chinese Communist party in 1921.He is recognized as one of the most prominent Communist theoreticians.He is also known as a great poet.Here is a brief biography of Mao Zedong.Mao Zedong w

15、as a very practical person before 1949.He did many thorough investigations about China and he developed his theories based on his studies.He was so successful in his early years that people worshipped him and everyone loved him.Things changed after 1949.Mao was a great thinker,but he had no respect

16、to any existing laws.Basically he was the law and he could not allow anybody else to challenge him.He challenged and destroyed the traditional Chinese culture,good and bad.He gave woman the same right as man,but destroyed the traditional value of woman.This also made him very unrealistic,as he said

17、in a poem,Ten thousand years is too long,seize the day.The Great Leap Forward(1958)is a direct result of such thinking.During the Cultural Revolution(1966-76),everything took a very long pause except constant class struggle and population growth.Inflation was zero and salary frozen for everyone.Educ

18、ation was badly damaged.Mao developed his fighting(or struggling)philosophy in his late years,as he said,Fighting with heaven,fighting with earth,and fighting with human being,what a great pleasure!China was isolated from the rest of the world and nobody knew the outside world at all.Chinese people

19、love Chairman Mao,though many people hate him.He gave himself a 7/3 score,i.e.,he thought he had done more good than bad to Chinese people in his lifetime with a ratio of 7 to 3.Michael Jordan Michael Jordan,the best known athlete in the world,is a leading scorer in the National Basketball Associati

20、on(NBA),who led the Chicago Bulls to many recent NBA championships.He is,by far,the best basketball player in the history of the game.Jordan was born in Brooklyn,New York,and raised in Wilmington,North Carolina.He accepted a basketball scholarship from the University of North Carolina,and in 1984 he

21、 led the United States basketball team to a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.Jordan left college in 1984 to play with the Bulls.He led the NBA in scoring for seven consecutive seasons(1987-1993),and averaged more than 30 points per game in each season.He also became the Bulls all-time

22、leading scorer.Jordan was also a member of the United States Olympic basketball team,known as the Dream Team,which captured the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona,Spain.Stating that he had lost his desire to play professional basketball,Jordan announced his retirement prior to the 1993-199

23、4 season.But Jordan ended his retirement from professional basketball by rejoining the Bulls near the end of the 1994-1995 NBA regular season.In the 1995-1996 season he enjoyed another great year,leading the NBA in scoring with 30.4 points per game and being named league MVP.The Bulls also became th

24、e first NBA team to win 70 games in a season,finishing with 72 victories,and they went on to win the NBA championship title.Jordan was named MVP of the NBA finals,becoming the first player to earn the honor four times,and he also had become a worldwide celebrity due to his success in the NBA and the
