2、ding the whole article,readers can feelstrongly that E.B.White didnttreat hisyoung pig as an animal,but a human,like a child,a friend or a relative.His variousand accurate descriptions of the death of his young pig make readers feel that one ofhis family members pass away.This can be spotted through

3、 his proper use of rhetoricand careful and accurate choosing words.Firstly,the author use various proper uses of rhetoric to show that he treated hisyoung pig as a human,like a closed friend,rather than animal.The Use of Personification.He gave us a slim greeting.In the authors eyes,he treated the p

4、ig as a friend:when they meet each other,they greet each other.The pig is not an animal any longer in his mind.In the upset position the corners of his mouth had been turned down,giving hima frowning expressionshaded by their coy little lashes,turned on me in disgustand hatred.From the above sentenc

5、es,we can know that the pig is personified here.He hashis various emotions,like a human.For example,his giving frowning expression,hisset smile,his little coy lashes and his eyes filled with disgust and hatred,all these areowned only by human.This uncertainty afflicts me with a sense of personal det

6、erioration;if I were indecent health I would know how many nights I had sat up with a pig.Generally speaking,“sit up”means sleep late,especially for waiting forsomeone.The author treats the pig like his child or relatives.This is a humorousexpression and conveys that he really thinks the pig as a fa

7、mily member.This was slapstick-the sort of dramatic treatment which instantly appealed tomy old dachshund,Fred,who joined the vigil,held the bag,and,when all wasover,presided at the interment.“To preside”is usually used for official conferences,ceremonies or otheractivities.Although we will find its

8、 humorous to say so,we can also exp erience howthe author treats the pig.the use of metaphorOnce in a while something slips-one of the actors goes up in his lines and the wholeperformance stumbles and halts.The metaphor is carried on.Occasionally something goes wrong.One of theactors in the play,in

9、my case,the pig,performs its part too early,thus creating chaos,and the whole play has to stop.The author humorously introduces the premature deathof his pig.the use of parallelismUnconsciously I held off,for an hour,the deed by which I would officiallyrecognize the collapse of the performance of ra

12、nd I feeldriven to account for this stretch of time if I were in decent health I would knowhow many nights I had sat up with a pig.In peoples eyes,its not big deal to kill a pig for meal,rather than the pig diesof a disease.However,the death of the pig is so influential for the author.The authoruses

13、“the pig died at last,and I lived”and we can feel that he is not describing ananimal but a people,who is so important for him.Whats more,the author uses“personal deterioration”to regret his not remembering the exact day for the death ofhis pig.The word“deterioration”is a serious word and conveys a s

14、olemn feeling.Wemay find its funny to say so but the author is serious.We had been having an unseasonable spell of weather-hot,closedays Everyone kept hoping for a break,but the break failed to come.First,lets look at the series of words to describe the frog.“Shut,scale,creep,drift,blow,blot,take po

15、ss ession of”,these words are vivid enough to show ushow unpleasant the fog makes the weather.And the unpleasant weathersets off theauthors worried and sad mood.The foggy weather is a symbol of the authors mood,for his pig was infected with disease just like the weather was covered by the fog.picked

16、 up the rope,made it fast to Freds collar(he is a notorious ghoul),Inoticed that although he weighed far less than the pig,he was harder to drag,beingpossessed of the vital spark.In the above description,the author gives us a very clearand vivid picture ofhid dog.He described the dog as a unpleasant

17、 dog who wants to eat the pigs flesh andhas no compassion and pity for the death of the pig.This makes an obviouscomparison between the authors sadness and the dogs cruelty.And it aro uses moreregret and pity of the author for the death of the pig.E.B.White is a very emotional writer,and he uses proper rhetoric and accuratewords to convey the subtle feelings and emotions towards the death of his young pigin the article Death of a Pig.
