2、hen I entered the house,as was always the case when I came home every year for the new year.He would rise early the next morning and carry the vegetables on a shoulder pole to sell them in the market in town.“So you are back,”he said looking up.“Yes,”I replied.“Your mother was looking out for you at

7、现了。母亲说：“今天不好卖？”父亲说：“便宜卖出去了。”母亲把凉了的菜重去热一道，父亲把满口袋的零角零分掏出来，叠好，唤母亲说：“买了两架鞭，一沓纸钱，六根香，还剩这些。”The noon the next day mother prepared the new years dinner and the whole family waited for fathers return from the market.We all sat in the central hall which looked out to the gate.Every now and then mother would

8、go outside and look down the road.Finally she came back and said,“Hes back.”Father soon appeared with his empty load.“Business wasnt easy today?”Mother asked him.“I had to sell them cheap.”father answered.Then,as mother was heating up the dishes that had gone cool,he took out from his pocket a lot o

9、f loose changes and began to count them.He then piled them up and told mother,“I bought two strings of firecrackers,one pad of paper money and six sticks of incense.This is what is left.”吃年饭时我陪父亲喝酒，父亲酒量不大，喝了一杯脸就红了。父亲说：“在外好好念书，别犯错误，家里有我！”吃完饭父亲要我写对联，我作了一副。上联是：静雨遍洒勤劳土地，下联是：鸿运常驻善良人家，横联是：好人平安。“鸿运“是我的名字的倒

10、写；“静雨”是我弟的名，他也在大学念书。对联的意思有点勉强，我解释给父亲听。父亲不识字，听了挺高兴，说：“蛮巧！蛮好！”I drank with father at dinner.He is not a heavy drinker and was flushed after only one cup.He said to me,“You keep your mind on your studies and dont do anything foolish.Ill take care of everything at home.”After dinner father told me to wr

11、ite out a new year couplets.I composed one,the first line of which read:Light rain falls on laboriously-tilled land.The second line read:Good fortune stays with kind-hearted family.And the horizontal scroll read:Peace to good people.Good fortune is my name in reverse,and light rain is the name of my

12、 younger brother who was also at college.I tried to explain the meaning of the lines to father who is illiterate.Though the meaning is a bit far-fetched,he seemed to be very pleased with them,“Quite good!Quite clever!”晚上我陪父亲守岁。父亲关上大门，在案堂上点了一柱香。香袅袅绕绕，父亲讲起他七岁时死了父母，给人家干活。有一次半夜他起来放牛，看见一条黑影跟在他后面，一忽儿出现，一忽

13、儿消失，父亲说：“那是父亲的魂跟着我，怕我害怕。可我还是怕得要死。”父亲说到这里笑了。后来零点钟声敲了，外边鞭炮震耳欲聋。父亲在堂案前作了三个揖，烧了一卷纸钱，口中念：“祖宗保佑！祖宗保佑！”父亲要我也作揖，我不想违他的心意，就作了。父亲开门时口中念道：“开门大发！开门大发！”That night I stayed up with father to see the new year in.He bolted the front door and then lit the incense sticks on the altar table.As we sat watching the smok

14、e curling upward,father told me about his childhood.He became an orphan at the age of seven and had to work for landlord.Once he had to get up in the middle of the night to pasture the ox.In the dark he saw a black shadow close behind him,appearing and disappearing by turns.“That was my fathers spir

15、it,following me so that I should not be frightened.Actually I was frightened to death!”Father laughed at the thought.When midnight struck,the noise of the firecrackers outside became deafening.Father bowed before the altar three times,burning a pad of paper money and murmured,“Our ancestors bless us

16、!Our ancestors bless us!”Father required me to bow and I did just as he wanted.Father opened the front door and murmured,“Welcome in big fortune!Welcome in big fortune!”然后是放鞭炮。我把鞭炮绑好在竹杆上，拿到屋外，父亲划火柴，有风，划了两根才点着，鞭炮噼噼啪啪响了，火星四爆，父亲站在我旁边看着，等鞭炮放完。鞭炮很长，响了好一阵，父亲一直站在我旁边看着。末了放完了，父亲说：“蛮响。”Then came the firecrack

17、ers.I tied them to a pole and took it outside.Father struck a match,but as there was a wind,it went out before he could light them.However he succeeded with his second match and the firecrackers went off with loud bangs,sending out sparks in all directions.Father stood beside me and watched.As it was a very long string of firecrackers the noise never seemed to end,and all the time father never moved an inch.Finally,when all was over,he said,“Quite loud!”
