、ty in debris explore the overlooked itemsLandscape photographer Tom Lowe looks at beach detritus differently to most peopleProjeCt 1 1aking interesting and unique images from details within the landscape that are often overlooked or considered not photogenic is a challenge that I love. The coast is

、a particularly great place to do this kind of photo project: its in a constant state of change, with new weird and wonderful subjects revealing themselves with the ebb and flow of each new tide. On the late December morning I took this shot, I arrived at Whitley Bay Beach to find the stormy winter s

、eas had washed up large banks of tangled kelp. Overnight sub-zero temperatures had dusted the kelp in a light frost, accentuating its form. I was drawn to this arrangement as I was instantly reminded of octopus tentacles. To get this shot, I mounted my Canon EOS 6D and 24-105mm lens on a tripod. I s

、et the sensitivity to ISO 100 and the aperture to f/11, and used a remote cable release to take an exposure of 2 sec. In post-processing I wanted to try to create a dark sci-fi feel reminiscent of work by the artist HR Giger. To do this, I desaturated the image and introduced cold tones. I also boos

、ted contrast and clarity and used radial filters to draw the viewers eye to the main part of the frame. MTip 1Look down. When youre out in the landscape, try to ignore the wider view and focus on all of the many small details that make it up. Look out for bold colours, texture, patterns and contrast

、.Tip 2At the beach, try to shoot on a falling tide. The receding water will reveal photogenic patterns and shapes in the sand, and will strand interesting objects such as kelp and driftwood on the beach.Tip 3Dont be afraid to stage a shot. I often collect natural objects that I then place within the

、 landscape to get a pleasing shot.Tip 4Slow down. When making coastal abstract images, it can take time to get your eye in and make good compositions. Use a tripod to help slow you down and consider which elements to include in your shots.Biography Tom LoweTom is a landscape photographer based in Wh

、t. About to begin its seventh year, 52Frames is an online group of photography enthusiasts from around the world, seeking to improve their camera skills through a weekly challenge that encourages creativity, inspiration and learning. Centred around a different topic each week, some challenges take o

、n the technical aspects of photography such as the rule of thirds, leading lines or fast shutter speeds while others take on a more creative approach, with themes such as love, the colour red and the crowd favourite, a chair. The point of a weekly photo challenge is not to take your best photo, but

、rather to take a photo. Every week. To be comfortable with whatever level you are at and, despite whatever else youve got going on during your busy week, to carve out a slice of time to do something creative for yourself. Although 52Frames is not a contest, we choose three photos each week for our T

、op Three honour, and one photographers photo is chosen as our album cover photo. In choosing these stand-outs, the 52Frames committee looks for photos that are technically superior, have the most powerful story, and are unique and creative. We also try to avoid choosing a photo that is too overly pr

、ocessed. Hidden in each challenge is a learning opportunity. Levitation Week invites the photographer to learn layer masking in Photoshop, or to try a fast shutter speed to freeze someone jumping in the air. Portrait of a Stranger Week teaches us that even if our palms are sweaty, most strangers on

、the street are very friendly. The challenges force participants to step out of their comfort zone each week, to learn new aspects of photography, and to experiment with editing techniques that they may have been too intimidated to try. Looking back after 52 weeks, participants find that not only has

、 their photography improved, but the world around them will never look the same.
