1、 A Teaching Plan for 5-sentence Basic Writing using non-finite verbs and clausesGuangzhou No. 41 Middle School Lifen Shen 广州市第41中学 英语科 沈丽芬I Course background (analysis of the teaching material) This teacher-adapted translation-based writing is designed to consolidate and improve students writing ski

2、lls. This material used is a semi-controlled writing composed of the first 5 Chinese sentences and later a coherent Chinese passage needed to put into English, with two purposes. The first is the integration of knowledge and skills to use what is learned into written communication; and the second is

3、 the integration of linguistic and non-linguistic targets to further understand the voluntary work of the Asian Games to build up ambition to overcome learning difficulties.II Class background It is a large group of 52 members who have intermediate level English and wish to broaden their vocabulary

4、and improve their 5-sentence writing skills needed for the MET exam. They badly need help and guidance to improve their writing because they lack necessary words and basic grammar acceptable in the exam.III Teaching aims A. Language knowledge 1. Vocabulary To help students with the necessary words,

5、phrases and drills related to the volunteer of the Asian Games. 2. FunctionTo integrate the learning of words and the use of language in a nearly real-life situation.3. TopicTo introduce some knowledge related to the volunteer of the Asian Games for students to classify it into coherent order of the

6、 5 sentences.B. Language skills 1. Logical skills To help students learn the importance of information processing by putting the 5 sentences into good order. 2. Writing skillsTo guide students to do a simple translation with the help of a dictionary or the teacher, including:a. to write with correct

7、 words choiceb. to write with correct “SV” sentence structure c. to strengthen their sense of improving writing using some common grammatical itemsC. Learning strategy 1. Cognitive strategy To focus on teachers talk and be able to take in the target sentence structure for creative use To generalize

8、language rules from teachers language examples 2. Adjusting strategy To learn how to get chances and help from others when having difficulties. To exchange personal ideas about writing with others (teacher)3. Communicative strategy To learn to refer to others writing for improvementTo be brave to sp

10、he voluntary work of the Asian Games and build up interest in Asian Games.IV Teaching methodThe task-based method adopted for this teaching highlights the students learning activities, in which students learn more than language knowledge and skills but also experience a writing process as a complete

11、 one with thinking and trying, choosing and deleting, also, revising and deciding. The lesson is based on the learning of students in an imitative authentic setting. The progression is guided and graded on a spiral development of teaching procedures. As a result, students can learn to use language i

12、n a natural and authentic setting, keep learning and drawing conclusions about language, and finally to attain the ability to use the English language. V Teaching materials 5-sentence Basic Writing using non-finite verbs and clausesI. Find the RuleThe following is a diary of Tracy in our class about

13、 the sports meeting held by our school three days ago. Listen and fill in the blanks, and pay attention to the usage of the words you fill.October 10th, 2009 Saturday SunnyToday, I participated in a sports meeting held by our school in Baogang stadium. To win the competition, every athlete was energ

14、etic and spared no effort to give good performance. I took part in the 80 meters hurdles and the high jump, which are my strong events. As a member of Class 5, I tried my best to do well in the sports. The competition was very exciting. Some of my classmates worked as volunteers, delivering the athl

15、etes water, tissue, clothes and so on. Finally, because we united together, our class won the first prize in our grade. When we heard the good news, we were very excited, singing and dancing. Though we felt a little tired, it was very meaningful and everyone is looking forward to the next sports mee

16、ting. Conclusion: we can use non-finite verbs (to do, v-ing, v-ed) and clauses (nominal clauses, attributive clauses and adverbial clause) to improve our writing. II. Conclusion: The benefit of the use of non-finite verbs and clauses is to shorten sentence

26、s, avoiding surpassing the number of sentences and using too many simple or compound sentences so that our writing looks more perfect. Therefore, to improve our writing, we should try to use non-finite verbs (to do, v-ing, v-ed) and clauses (nominal clauses, attributive clauses and adverbial clause)

Guiding principleAs is noted in the English Curriculum Criterion, students, with the help and encouragement by teachers, should experience, practice, involve and explore language thereby to discover the rules behind it and master language knowledge and skills. They sh

28、ould regulate their affect and attitudes to build up a set of effective learning strategies and an autonomous leaning ability. Therefore, this lesson is to promote students ability to think and express in English, and to taste success in writing.B. Class design draftThe progression of this teaching

30、assage6. teachers feedback on students performanceVII Teaching proceduresTask one:Brainstorming to elicit what to translateDictate a diary and fill in the blanks, and then draw a conclusion that we can use non-finite verbs and clauses to improve our writing. Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games is around the

31、corner, and what will you do for the games?Task two:Co-build of the 5 sentencesDiscuss with partners and divide the contents into five sentences in Chinese, and then discuss where to use non-finite verbs or clauses.Task three: Translate some phrases to help translate the sentencesTask four: Assessme

32、nt/ sharing of the writingAsk 5 students to write down 5 sentences on the blackboard, to elicit as many varieties as possible and also to balance their quality. And then check every sentence one by one. Ask the Ss to talk if the sentences are right or wrong and if they have another way to translate.
