2、 thenecessity of replacing the traditional forms of Englishhomework with the diverse and meaningful ones,which focusmuch more on kids critical thinking and innovation.Planning effective homework assignments as furtherlearning opportunities1.Handling copy assignment.Students in the elementaryschool d
3、o need this kind of assignment to help them memorizeeach vocabulary item and improve their handwriting.However,since most students have reported that they find this job boringand are reluctant to complete it,better ways have to becreated.The following are examples for reference.In your lesson,you te
4、ach several adjectives like big,small,tall,short,thin and fat.Showthem a big piece of paper.Get them to fold it into 8 equal parts.Then cut it along a long crease in the middle.Finally,fold thepaper again into an 8-page lovely book.Say,you are going tomake one sentence on each page with a target voc
5、abularybig,For example:-This is a big house.-Giant is a bigman.-There is a big mountain near my home.When the sentences are made,they have written thenew word big for 8 times without awareness,but with greathappiness and creativity.2.Handling writing assignments.It should be clear in ourmind that wr
6、iting can not be improved within short period oftime.It needs a process of accumulation.When you want to getthe kids to write a composition about Christmas,for example,before the start of writing,they should be aware of what theycan write.You can ask them to recall the things they can see atChristma
7、s and then build a mind map,their minds may link tothe following items:Santa Christmas tree Chimney Socks GiftsThen build sentences like these:*Santa will come on Christmas Eve.*There are a lot of Christmas trees in the street.With steps above,their writing can be easier.And youcan invite kids to ta
8、lk about it before class next day.3.Handling the assignments that aim to generate criticalthinking and creative ideas.Most of educational experts holdthe view that Chinese generations are losing their abilities tothink freely and critically.To stop this situation from bad to worse,we shouldconcentra
9、te more on training the kids how to survey,and howto pose questions accordingly.Wed better encourage them toundergo the following processes at the very beginning of eachlesson.*Do a survey onWhat I have already known about What I havent known and want to know and learn fromthe teacher.*Surf the Net
10、for the information you want to know most.*Think of three questions you met while reading.What have listed above attempt to inspire the students toprepare thinking for the next day rather than memorizing inadvance by rote learning,like copying and reciting.Some ideas inspired from oversea counterpar
11、ts1.We suggest our 5-graders highlight the most importantmoment of the day by manga drawing and captions in English.2.When it comes to the teaching material like timetable,apart from asking them to copy the vocabularies in it,we canprompt them to design their own timetables and check it everyday by
12、ticking the items they have already done.During thenthey learn to manage their time to form a good routine as well.3.Reading is advocated in every grade in schools overseas.And kids are also demanded to write a book review orreflection when finishing the reading.For a 5-6 graders,reading is can be a
13、 must-do work every day,but writing a bookreview in a second language,can be something demanding.Instead,we can get them into considering questions,like:*What does the story tell us?*What can we learn from the story?*Who is your favourite character?What makes him/herso?*As a reader,what do you want
14、to say to the author?4.Ask the kids to do some work,known as social practice,such as recommending the best public place for eating in theneighborhood and justify their choices via a slide show,etc.Kids can either obtain the data from the Internet or via fieldstudies,during which kids optimize their
15、capabilities,likecommunicative abilities.ConclusionHomework,as a necessary complement to evaluatestudents performance should not be overlooked.New andappealing homework forms are proved to successfully motivateand inspire the learners.When designing homework,learningthe students interests,language levels as well as theirlearning strategies all should be taken into account.
