They found it impossible to fit into the main currents of culture and difficult to be assimilated comfortably.,about the article,Canada,Before Canada became a nation in 1867, the area of North America that now composes Canada was a large expanse of widely s

3、cattered communities of British and French origins. It was an area with diverse landscapes that physically divided them from the north of the United States. In 1870,Manitoba became a province of Canada.,Mtis,During the height of the North American fur trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, many Briti

4、sh, Scottish and French-Canadian fur traders married First Nations and Inuit women, mainly First Nations Cree, Ojibwa, or Saulteaux. The majority of these fur traders were French and CatholicTherefore, their children, the Mtis, were exposed to both the Catholic and indigenous belief systems, thus cr

5、eating a new distinct aboriginal people in North America. First Nations women were the link between cultures, they not only provided companionship for the fur traders, but also aided in their survival. First Nations women were able to translate the language, sew new clothing for their husbands, and

6、generally were involved in resolving any cultural issues that arose.,Red River Rebellion,A new government Canadian Confederation was formed in 1867.The Canadian government appointed an English-speaking governor, William McDougall.The Mtis, led by Riel, prevented McDougall from entering the territory

7、.,The Mtis created a provisional government, Riel being the leader of the government.He undertook to negotiate directly with the Canadian government.,Meanwhile, Riels men arrested members of a pro-Canadian faction who had resisted the provisional government. They included an Thomas Scott. Riels gove

8、rnment tried and convicted Scott, and executed him for threatening to murder Louis Riel.,In 1870, the legislature passed the Manitoba Act, allowing the Red River settlement to enter Confederation as the province of Manitoba. The Act also incorporated some of Riels demands, such as provision of separ

9、ate French schools for Mtis children and protection of the practice of Catholicism.,After reaching agreement, Canada sent a military expedition to Manitoba to enforce federal authority. Now known as the Wolseley Expedition . Outrage grew in Ontario over Scotts execution.Riel fled and the arrival of

During a time of great social change in Western Canada, the Mtis believed that the Dominion of Canada had failed to address the protection of their rights, their land and

12、their survival as a distinct people.At that time,the Mtis were alarmed that the bufflo were hunted by intruders.However,bufflo were regarded as a chief source of food they depended on for generations. In addition,native birdsloons were also threatend .,The rebellion ended for the Mtis with their defeat at the siege of Batoche, the eventual scattering of their allied Aboriginal forces elsewhere, and the trial and hanging of Louis Riel.,Thank you!,
