2、e whole poem is a direct way to express the daughters admiration to her mother. The poet uses precise words and figures of speech to express that the mother is admirable because of her beauty. The first stanza describes the happy childhood and the beauty of the mother. The first four lines tell us t
3、hat her mother is playing with her three friends. They “shriek at the pavement” (line 6) and have great fun sharing youth. A simple scene expresses the mothers happy childhood before she became a mother. The last line tells us the beauty of the mother when she was young. When the daughter looks at h
4、er mothers “polka-dot dress blows round your legs” (line 7), she is reminded of “Marilyn”(line 7),a famous ,beautiful and charming actress. The word “Marilyn” tells us how glamorous the future mother when she was a teenager. The choice of the word expresses that the poet is proud of her mothers beau
5、ty. Although we dont know her mothers appearance, we all know Marilyn. She compares her mother to Marilyn in order to tell us how charming when her mother was a teenager. She admires her very much. To conclude, the two different scenes tell us how the poet admires her mother by describing her mother
6、s childhood life and her mothers beauty.At the second stanza, the poet expresses her admiration of her mother by describing the scene of her mother dancing. Her mother was dancing at a ball. The future mother was so charming with “the thousand eyes, he fizzy, movie tomorrows” (line 10). She danced s
7、o well that her mother (the poets grandmother)”stands at the close with a hiding for the late one.”(line 12 and 13). The reason is that the future mother does not want to leave. “In the ballroom with the thousand eyes”(line 10)using exaggeration to show her mothers fascination in the ball, as if the
8、re were thousand eyes on her mother when she was dancing. This figure of speech expresses how well the future mother danced and the daughters admiration to her mother. Her mother can attract so many peoples view. From this line , we can know how popular and energetic when her mother was a teenager.
9、All in all, the mother was popular and energetic when she was young. The poet expresses her admiration to her mother showing how attractive she was and how much fun she had in the glamorous life that the poet imagines her mother to have had.In the third stanza, the poet also expresses her admiration
10、 of her mother of her beauty although the lady became a mother because of the birth of the poet. The first line describes the moment of her birth with the phrase “my loud, possessive yell” (line15), conveying the idea that this was a life-changing moment. Her mother was not a young teenage any more,
11、 or didnt have the carefree life of a teenager, and she became a mother because the poets birth. However, the poet still admires her mother. “high-heeled red shoes, relics”(line 16) pictures her mother walking in them referring to the poet missing her mother. “Relics” is an old thing. Although it pa
12、sted many years, the high-hell red shoes became a relics, the poet still remembers her mothers beauty with the shoes. Generally speaking, the poet loves her mother so that she can remember wore a pair of beautiful high-heeled red shoes, and she admires her mothers beauty.The fourth stanza describes
13、the poets admiration of her mother by the scene of the young mother teaching her daughter to dance and reflection the young mothers teenagerhood. The mother needs to admire because of her optimistic. This stanza begins with “Cha cha cha”(line 21), a kind of dance. The poet remembers how her mother t
14、aught her to dance on the way home from “Mass” (line 21). The mother taught her daughter when she was young. So, even the young lady became a mother, an adult, she was still happy and optimistic to face the life, and liked dancing. The poet remembers this scene to prove her mothers happiness, and sh

In the last two lines, the poet shows her admiration of her mother by looking back the mothers young life. “The sparkle and waltz and laugh” (line 25) was written in the last two lines in order to look back and link to the first two stanzas about the mothers teenage
16、r. She describes her mothers love is “glamorous” (line 24), and it lasts from the mothers teenager to ten years later after she became a mother. In this way, the poet eulogizes her mothers beauty and enchantment due to her attitude to love. To conclude, she imagines how full of life and fun her mother had before she was born. All this were written in order to show the daughters admiration and love to her mother. The mother is beautiful. The mother is admirable by the beauty.
