3、enturefilledwithuncertainty,riskandhardship-musthavebeenofoverpoweringproportions(overwhelming,overcoming).AsOscarHandlinstates,theearlyimmigrantsofAmericawouldcollidewithunaccustomedproblems,learntounderstandalienwaysandalienlanguages,managetosurviveinaveryforeignenvironment. Despitetheobstaclesand

4、uncertaintiesthatlayaheadofthem,millionsdidmigrateto“thepromisedland”-America.Butwhatwasitthatmovedsomanytomigrateagainstsuchoverwhelmingodds?TherewereprobablyasmanyreasonsforcomingtoAmericaastherewerepeoplewhocame.Itwasahighlyindividualdecision.Yetitcanbesaidthatthreelargeforces-religiouspersecutio

5、n,politicaloppressionandeconomichardship-providedthechiefmotivesforthemassmigrationstoAmerica.TheywererespondingintheirownwaytothepledgeoftheDeclarationofIndependence:thepromiseoflife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness.ThesearchforfreedomofworshiphasbroughtpeopletoAmericafromthedaysofthepilgrimstomoder

6、ntimes.In1620,forexample,theMayflowercarriedacargoof102passengerswho” welcomedtheopportunitytoadvancethegospelofChristintheseremoteparts.AnumberofothergroupssuchastheJewsandQuakerscametoAmericaafterthePilgrims,allseekingreligiousfreedom.Inmorerecenttimes,anti-SemiticpersecutioninHitlersGermanyhasdri

7、venpeoplefromtheirhomestoseekrefugeinAmerica.However,notallreligioussectshavereceivedthetoleranceandunderstandingforwhichtheycame.ThePuritansoftheMassachusettsBayColonyshowedaslittletolerancefordissentionbeliefsastheAnglicansofEnglandhadshownthem.Theyquicklyexpelledotherreligiousgroupsfromtheirsocie

8、ty.Minorityreligioussects,fromtheQuakersandShakersthroughtheCatholicsandJewstotheMormons,haveatvarioustimessufferedbothdiscriminationandhostilityintheUnitedStates. Butthediversityofreligiousbeliefhasmadeforreligioustoleration.Indemandingfreedomforitself,eachsecthadtopermitfreedomforothers.Theinsiste

9、nceofeachsuccessivewaveofimmigrantsuponitsrighttopracticeitsreligionhelpedmakefreedomofworshipacentralpartoftheAmericanCreed.PeoplewhogambledtheirlivesontherighttobelieveintheirownGodwouldnoteasilysurrenderthatrightinanewsociety. Thesecondgreatforcebehindimmigrationhasbeenpoliticaloppression.America

10、hasalwaysbeenarefugefromtyranny.Asanationconceivedinliberty,ithashelpouttotheworldthepromiseofrespectfortherightsofman.EverytimearevolutionhasfailedinEurope,everytimeanationhassuccumbedtotyranny,menandsailacrosstheseas.Thisprocesshasnotcometoanendinourownday.TheterrorsofHitlersGermanyand MussolinisI

11、taly,theterriblewarsofSoutheastAsia-allhavebroughtnewthousandsseekingsafetyintheUnitedStates. Theeconomicfactorhasbeenmorecomplexthanthereligiousandpoliticalfactors.Fromtheverybeginning,somehavecometoAmericainsearchofriches,someinflightfrompoverty,andbecausetheywereboughtandsoldandhadnochoice. Andth

12、evariousreasonsareintertwined.Thussomeearlyarrivalswereluredtotheseshoresbydreamsofamassinggreatwealth,liketheSpanishinMexicoandPeru.Theseadventurers,expectingquickprofitsingold,soonfoundthatrealwealthlayinsuchcropsatobaccoandcotton.AstheybuiltuptheplantationeconomyinstateslikeVirginiaandtheCarolina

13、s,theyneededcheaplabor.SotheybegantoimportindenturedservantsfromEngland(menandwomenwhoagreedtolaboratermofyearsinexchangeforeventualfreedom),andslavesfromAfrica. TheprocessofindustrializationinAmericaincreasedthedemandforcheaplabor,andchaoticeconomicconditionsinEuropeincreasedthesupply.Ifsomeimmigra

14、ntscontinuedtobelievethatthestreetsofNewYorkwerepavedwithgold,moreweredrivenbythehungerandhardshipoftheirnativelands.TheIrishpotatofamineof1845broughtalmostamillionpeopletoAmericainfiveyears.AmericanmanufacturersadvertisedinEuropeannewspapers,offeringtopaythepassageofanymanwillingtocometoAmericatowo

Inthecommunityhehadleft,theimmigrantusuallyhadafixedplace.Hewouldcarryonhisfatherscraftoftrade;hewouldfarmhisfatherslandorthatsmallportionofitthatwaslefthimafteritwasdivide

17、dwithhisbrothers.Onlywiththemostexceptionaltalentandenterprisecouldhebreakoutofthecircumstancesinlifeintowhichhehadbeenborn.TherewerenosuchcircumstancesforhimintheNewWorld.Oncehavingbrokenwiththepast,exceptforsentimentaltiesandculturalinheritance,hehadtorelyonhisownabilities.Itwasthefutureandnotthep

18、astwhichhehadtoface.ExceptfortheNegroslave,theimmigrantcouldgoanywhereanddoanythinghistalentspermitted.Alarge,virgincontinentlaybeforehim,andhehadonlytojoinittogetherbycanals,railroadsandroads.Ifhefailedtoachievethedreamofabetterlifeforhimself,hecouldstillretainitforhischildren. Therewerethemajorfor
