Social life of economic globalization and informatization has made English become more and more important. As the most important information car

2、rier, English has become the most widely used language in many fields of our life. English education is accompanying with our country reform and optimization of educational system as one of the three most important subjects. English is a must course in compulsory education stage as well as in higher

3、 education stage. The quality of English education reflects the quality of our education.Since China adopted the policy of reform and open,International communication has been increasing constantly.English,as the most common language throughout the world,the importance of English has been recognized

4、 gradually.Now English class is one of the most important class in schools and students ranging from the pupil是 to the graduates are learning English.A mass of English tests are existing to measure the level of English of students. However,the problems of English language teaching in China stand out

5、 with the enthusiasm of the English learning.There are two problems I want to discuss in this paper.One is the purpose of English teaching,the other is the method of English teaching. When I was in senior high school,my English teacher said that many students in China did not like English at all,but

6、 she still asked us to spare no efford to learn English well so that we could pass the college entrance exam smoothly.It is the truth that English is an important subject in senior high school entrance exam,college entrance exam and even the post graduate entrance exam,but this sentence also reflect

7、s a fact that many teachers,especially the teachers in junior high schools and senior high schools,under the pressure of enrollment rate , just regard English as a subject and try their best to help student gain high scords in exams,not to cultivate the interest of English for the student and neglec

8、t English as language itself,let alone introduce the western culture in the class.For example,some teachers may tell students that they must choose “13” if the question touch on which the unlucky number is in western people.While the teachers never explain why 13 is not lucy in the view of western p

9、eople.Even in the colleges,a lot of English teachers emphsize the passing rate of CET4 or CET6 because the grade of CET 4 or CET 6 is a stepping- stone to success when college students look for jobs.In fact, these requirements do not accord with the initial purpose of teaching English.The initial pu

10、rpose is that English should be taught as a mean to communicate with the world and to know multiculture of different countries over the world.By learning English,students should open the eyes to see the diversity of the world.It is the wrong purpose that teachers teach students English to help them

11、pass all kinds of Enlish tests in China. Because the purpose of teaching English is wrong, the method to teach English is not advisable accordingly.Listening,speaking,reading and writing are the most basic skills in English,but teachers attach the great importance to the reading and the listening bu

12、t give students few opportunities to practice speaking and writting.In the class,some teachers adopt “Duck-stuffing type of teaching” yet students have no chance to practice the sentences which they have learnt or to communicate with teachers in English.What they have to do is just to take notes so

13、that they can master the grammer well and then get a good marks in tests. Because of the limitation of the teaching progress,teachers can not spare time to students to let them speak English freely in class. Although we know that English is a language used to express ones idea and get some informati

14、on from others,teachers just consider it as a subject in class.What is more,the materials that students listen or read is not authentic.These materials have been adapted by chinese scholars,applied to the English tests for chinese students.In senior high school, perhaps few teachers ask students to

15、read books Writen by Conan Doyle or J.K Rowling,but they must require students to do different kinds of reading comprehension.Most teachers may suggest students to buy listening training books so that students can get better scores in tests in spite of allowing students to watch English or American

16、TV show because teachers think those will waste a lot of valuable time.Today in English teaching,we can not deny the fact that many teacher teach English for tests, but not for the language.Meanwhile,the wrong purpose lead to the false teaching methods.I think the fundamental problems in English tea

17、ching in China are these. So how to solve these problems?I think the first thing is to reform the system of test.I support the policy that English is no longer as the subject tested in college entrance exam but the reference when students are enrolled by universities.This reform can alleviate the bu

18、rdens on students so they can study English due to the interest not the tests.Then I think, the specia English classes can be offered in junior high schools and senior high schools in order to give students more chances to communicate with teachers and classmates in English,which will help improve t

19、heir the level of speaking.In this special English classes,teachers can also guide students to read famous English books and let them to talk about their opinions after reading these authentic books.Teachers can also introduce a lot of western culture through these authentic books.In a word,only whe

20、n English is not regarded as a subject,could the problems of English teaching be solved.Nowadays,English is an international language. We can not escape from the fact that everyone need to use English in the age of globalization. English can elevate people life quality. With the help of English we can know the world better and easily. English education has achieved a lot of success since the reform and opening-up policy put forward in 1978. English education in our country should put on the strategic place all the time.
