13、he wonderful memories of Christmas, Mum.A Brief History of Mothers DayIn the late 1850s, Ann Jarvis, widely considered the mother of Mothers Day, established Mothers Work Day, a day dedicated to teaching mothers how to better prepare food and clean so as to prevent disease. This mission was driven b

14、y personal experience, as seven of her eleven children died before adulthood. Though personal, this experience was anything but unique in a time before vaccines and a widespread understanding of germ theory.Jarviss work took on new meaning during the Civil War. Her home was in close proximity to a m

15、ajor battlefield and the county was flooded with wounded Confederate and Union soldiers. She organized groups of mothers to visit the wounded and ailing of both Union and Confederate loyalty, tending to their injuries and instructing soldiers and camp staff about basic sanitation strategies. Jarvis

16、was not only concerned with the well-being of the young soldiers and sons, but also with that of a post-war, unified, country.The carnage of the war spurred women, like Jarvis, around the country to find ways to help where they could. After the war, Julia Ward Howe, helped to reshape what Mothers Da

17、y could mean. As a volunteer for the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War, she helped alleviate the effects of disease and injury. After the War, Julia wrote her “Appeal to womanhood throughout the world”, later the “Mothers Day Proclamation”, which attempted to unite women around

18、the world together to bring about a lasting peace:Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience. We, women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country, to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.Mother

19、s Day continued to be celebrated as a movement for peace, but was only celebrated at local levels until the turn of the century. In 1908, Anna Jarvis, daughter of the aforementioned Ann Jarvis, began to campaign to make Mothers Day a federally recognized day in honor of her mother who had died in 19

20、05. The first nationally celebrated Mothers Day was in May of 1914. But what had been a day dedicated first to cleanliness and later to peace was again repurposed, this time to celebrate mothers themselves.As we celebrate the devoted and loving mothers in our lives, we think back to the origins of t

22、 Day in AmericaHonoring and celebrating Mothers day traces as far back in recorded history as the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptian goddess Isis was considered the patron saint of women and children. She was revered among the Egyptians who held an annual festival in her honor. Of all of the ancient Eg

23、yptian deities, her legend has survived the centuries and even crossed into other cultures.The Romans held a place for her in their temple and would have three-day festivals. Most of the festivals dancers musicians and singers were all females. The Roman festival of Isis was celebrated to mark the b

24、eginning of winter or before an important battle.The ancient Greeks used to honor Mothers every spring for three days. The Greeks would hold a festival filled with games, parades, food, and entertainment. The festival is dedicated to the Mother goddess Rhea. In Greek mythology, Rhea was a Titan, the

25、 mother of many Greek gods including Zeus. Legend has it that Rheas husband Chromos was fearful of a prophecy that told of him being overthrown by one of his sons. So whenever Rhea would give birth to a boy, Chromos would swallow the baby.When Zeus was born, Rhea hid him away in a cave and tricked K

26、ronos into swallowing a stone she had wrapped in clothes. Eventually, Zeus returned to defeat his father and force him to vomit forth his brothers who gratefully made Zeus their leader and joined him in revolt against the Titans. His mother goddess Rhea name means “flow and ease”. As the wife of Kro

27、nos, she represents the eternal flow of time and generations. Every dawn of the ancient festival day, honey cakes and flowers were shared. This became a tradition that spread throughout Asia Minor, all the way to the Romans.The Romans tried to unsuccessfully introduce their own goddess, Cybele, to t

28、he Greeks. Cybele was also known as Magna Mater or the Great Mother. The Roman celebration of Magna Mater took place between March 15th and March 22nd, around the same time as the Greek Festival of Rhea.Later in Europe, an early incarnation of a holiday to honor motherhood started in the Christian C

29、hurch. This day would be referred to as Mothering Day or Mothering Sunday. This became a day when the whole family could gather together.By the 1920s, the custom of Mothering Sunday had spread to Ireland and other parts of Europe. When the first English settlers came to America, the Mothering Day tr

30、adition was left behind. There are different explanations for this happening one reason being the harsh conditions the early settlers faced which left little time for celebrations. Another reason was the Puritans that fled England to America wanted to practice more conservatively and ignored the mor

31、e secular holidays.The first North American Mothers Day probably started with Julia Ward Howes Mothers Day Proclamation in 1870. She was troubled by the death and destruction of the Civil War. She called on mothers to come together in protest of what she saw as senseless killing. Sons killing the so

32、ns of other mothers. Howe proposed converting July 4th to Mothers Day to dedicate to the nations anniversary of peace.Instead, this new Mothers holiday was designated on June 2nd. In 1873, womens groups across North America observed this new Mothers holiday, but most of these groups died out when Ho

33、use funding dried up. However, the seed was planted and on May 9th, 1905, a woman named Anna Jarvis began campaigning for an official day to honor mothers, after her own mother had passed away.Anna Jarvis was inspired by her mothers life work and petitioned the church where her mother taught Sunday

34、School to hold a Mothers Day celebration. On may 10th of 1908, the official Mothers Day celebration took place at two churches one in Grafton, West Virginia and the other in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The West Virginia event drew over 400 and Anna Jarvis arranged for white carnations to be given to

35、 every mother in attendance. Anna Jarvis quit working and devoted herself full-time to the creation of Mothers Day.After endless petitions, she finally convinced the World Sunday School Organization to back her and in 1912 West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mothers Day.Two

36、years later Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance. From that point on, the second Sunday in May would be Mothers Day.Nowadays, Mothers Day is widely celebrated worldwide, on which occasion families and friends gather together, complimenting each other.
