This is no time for romantic illusions and e

、mpty philosophical debates about freedom. This is a time for action. What is needed is a strategy for change, a tactical program that will bring the Negro into the mainstream of American life as quickly as possible. So far, this has only been offered by the nonviolent movement. Without recognizing t

、his we will end up with solutions that dont solve, answers that dont answer and explanations that dont explain. Para. 27:

、Let this affirmation be our ringing cry. It will give us the courage to face the uncertainties of the future. It will give our tired feet new strength as we continue our forward stride toward the city of freedom. When our days become dreary with low hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights be

、come darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral unive

、rse is long but it bends toward justice. Lesson 4 Professions for WomenShe was intensely sympathetic. She was im

、mensely charming. She was utterly unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed herself daily. If there was chicken, she took the leg; if there was a draft she sat in it in short she was so constituted that she never had a mind or a wish of her own, but preferred to sy

、mpathize always with the minds and wishes of others. Above all I need not say itshe was pure. whenever I felt the shadow of her wing or the radiance of her halo upon my page, I took up the inkpot a

、nd flung it at her. She died hard. Her fictitious nature was of great assistance to her. It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality. She was always creeping back when I thought I had dispatched her. Though I flatter myself that I killed her in the end, the struggle was severe; it took much ti

But it was a real experience; it was an experience that was bound to befall all women writers at that time. Killing the Angel in the House was part of the occupation of a woman writer.

Lesson 5 Love Is a FallacyI went back to my room with a heavy heart. I had gravely underestimated the size of

、 my task. This girls lack of information was terrifying. Nor would it be enough merely to supply her with information. First she had to be taught to “think”. This loomed as a project of no small dimensions, and at first I was tempted to give her back to Petey. But then I got to thinking about her ab

、undant physical charms and about the way she entered a room and the way she handled a knife and fork, and I decided to make an effort. Heartened by the knowledge

、 that Polly was not altogether a cretin, began a long, patient review of all I had told her. Over and over and over again I cited instances, pointed out flaws, kept hammering away without letup. It was like digging a tunnel. At first, everything was work, sweat, and darkness. I had no idea when I wo

、uld reach the light, or even if I would. But I persisted. I pounded and clawed and scraped, and finally I was rewarded. I saw a chink of light. And then the chink got bigger and the sun came pouring in and all was bright.

Lesson 9 The Way to Rainy MountainPara. 7: Descending eastward, the highland meadows are stairway to the plain. In July the inland slope of the Rockies is luxuriant with flax and buckwheat,

、 stonecrop and larkspur. The earth unfolds and the limit of the land recedes. Clusters of trees and animals grazing far in the distance cause the vision to reach away and wonder to build upon the mind. The sun follows a longer course in the day, and the sky is immense beyond all comparison. The grea

、t billowing clouds that sail upon it are shadows that move upon the grain like water, dividing light. Farther down, in the land of the Crows and Blackfeet, the plain is yellow. Sweet clover takes hold of the hills and bends upon itself to cover and seal the soil. There the Kiowas paused on their way

、; they had come to the place where they must change their lives. The sun is at home on the plains. Precisely there does it have the certain character of a god. When the Kiowas came to land of the Crows, they could see the dark lees of the hills at dawn across the Bighorn River, the profusion of ligh

Not yet would they veer southward to the caldron of the land that lay below; they must wean their blood from the northern weather and hold the mountains a while longer in their view. They bore Tai-me in procession to the east.

Para. 14:Now there is a funeral silence in the rooms, the endless wake of some final word. The walls have closed in upon my grandmothers house. When I r

、eturned to it in mourning, I saw for the first time in my life how small it was. It was late at night, and there was a white moon, nearly full. I sat for a long time on the stone steps by the kitchen door. From there I could see out across the land; I could see the long row of trees by the creek, th

A cricket had perched upon the handrail, only a few inches away from me. It had gone there, I thought, to live and die, for there, of all places, was its small definit

、ion made whole and eternal. A warm wind rose up and purled like the longing within me.
